TCS CEO K Krithivasan on Wednesday shared updates on the company's advancements in Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) and highlighted the company’s commitment to innovation and talent development in the area of AI.

During TCS’ Q1 FY24 results press conference, Krithivasan began by expressing TCS's belief that Gen AI has the potential to revolutionise knowledge work by assisting and augmenting individuals, thereby enhancing efficiency and effectiveness. TCS is currently engaged in over 50 proof-of-concepts and pilot projects related to Gen AI, with an impressive pipeline of more than 100 “opportunities”, he shared.

To fully realise the transformative power of Generative AI, Krithivasan emphasised the need for enterprise-wide initiatives rather than isolated use cases. Collaboration between business, legal, risk and compliance, and data and technology teams is vital, he added.

TCS aims to engage with customers to help define their Gen AI transformation strategy, establish appropriate data strategies and platforms, enforce necessary guardrails, and drive DevSecOps cycles for effective implementation.

Leveraging TCS's domain expertise, the company is reportedly drawing upon a pool of approximately 65,000 contextual masters and domain experts across various industries, as well as a workforce of 20,000 technology solution and enterprise architects. These resources are instrumental in developing and implementing Gen AI solutions, Krithivasan said.

“This group (TCS) has already filed over 710 patents for AI inventions in the just past five years. And 282 of patent of these patents have been granted already,” he added.

In total, TCS has filed 7,447 patents, which is an increase of 695 over last year. In Q1 FY24 alone, TCS applied for 142 patents and was awarded 126, averaging nearly two patents per working day. Notably, out of the 3,004 patent holders at TCS, 753 are women.

Currently, 50,000 TCS associates possess AI/ML solutions building skills, with over 9,000 holding top external certifications. In FY23, TCS associates dedicated a collective 1.4 million hours to learning AI/ML and related skills. As part of the company's commitment to talent development, TCS has initiated large-scale internal programs focused on multiple Gen AI solutions and solution suites.

Krithivasan revealed that TCS is also partnering with hyperscalers to build a talent pool of over 100,000 associates trained in generative AI.

In Q1 FY24, TCS witnessed notable growth in revenue, with a year-on-year (YoY) increase of 12.6 per cent, reaching Rs 59,381 crore. The company's revenue growth was particularly notable when considering the constant currency figures, which exhibited a YoY growth rate of 7 per cent.
