To Write About Insurance Is A Difficult Task, Says Kapil Mehta

“Writing about insurance is very difficult. Insurance deals with a very messy subject. We are talking about things like death, accidents, natural disasters and more. To think how people write about insurance - it is a case of unfortunate tragedy,” says Mehta

There is a lot of information deficit related to insurance in this country. By writing this book ‘Happily Insured’, I have tried to dispel a lot of myths and make the subject easy for a layman in their 30’s or 40’s, who want to understand insurance and buy it.

As Co-Founder of SecureNow Insurance Broker, Kapil Mehta deals with insurance everyday. Speaking about his book, Mehta tried to shed a lot of myths about insurance.

“Writing about insurance is very difficult. Insurance deals with a very messy subject. We are talking about things like death, accidents, natural disasters and more. To think how people write about insurance - it is a case of unfortunate tragedy,” said Mehta. He added, “10 years ago when I started writing about the subject in newspapers, I tried to explore the boundaries a bit and used different phrases.”

Mehta added that writing about insurance is also challenging because it’s a legal contract. “It is dominated by lawyers and that can be an issue.” Citing a personal example which he has also written in the book, Mehta said that often the language of the clauses is very intimidating. “I have always tried to make it simple, less intimidating,” said Mehta.

The decision to write a book to create awareness on insurance came with an incident which Mehta shared. “My daughter was getting into college and I wrote an article about the challenges in front of the youngster who is getting into college. I gave it the title “Before it flies”. But the final title was changed to “Learn about Student insurance”. That is when I decided that I should write a book myself,” said Mehta. He thanked his son & wife for being the co-editors to the book and also publishers Harper Collins for all their support.

Talking about the book, he said the book is about two different things - about the risks and uncertainties of life and how one can address them. There are situations when insurance cannot help but looking into the eye can help one manage situations. He also shed some insight on Medical insurance & travel insurance.
