“Life doesn’t allow you to smile, anger happens automatically, you have to choose to smile.” When well-known monk, motivational speaker, coach and author, Gaur Gopal Das, speaks the audience is left spellbound.

Speaking at the Gurugram chapter of IBLF, Das said on Wednesday: “Peace is a (matter of) choice. Being positive is a choice. Hatred happens automatically, (but) love is a choice … I have chosen peace every split second over being angry.”   Das has recently come up with his latest book, “Energise Your Mind: A Monk’s Guide to Mindful Living”. He is the author of several bestsellers.

Known to have a witty take on virtually everything, he had the audience in splits, when he said at the beginning of the session: “Man proposes, Air India disposes.” He was referring to his delayed flight.

He spoke about life and death in a manner that had the audience thinking. “Take-off and landing is not in our control. Neither is the turbulence in between. Similarly, birth and death aren’t in our control. It is not about birth and death, it is about the turbulence in between… and it is these turbulences that we call problems. Death is an event and life is a journey. Event will be done, journey is what you need to take care of,” he said.

Humming “Ae zindagi gale laga le”, Das said that there are so many everyday issues and there is a trigger for everything, as he asked everyone to pause and reflect. “Is that what is life meant for? Paying 42 per cent taxes with surcharge? Why are we living? Will there be a single day in your life when you will not have a trigger to be disturbed? There will always be something somewhere. As human beings, being affected is all normal”.

His parting shot: “The mental immunity of some is better than others. Why is it so? It's because of the mindset. You go to a gym, your metabolism increases. Your capacity increases. It doesn't happen on Day One. You have to start slow and small, and that's where you increase your capacity. If you don’t start, and if you don’t work on it, you won’t reach anywhere. Nothing is going to change overnight. Our capacity to handle those triggers will increase when we work on it”.
