The President and CEO of Micron Technology, Sanjay Mehrotra, on Monday held a meeting with India's Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal. The meeting revolved around Micron's ambitious investment plans in the country's semiconductor sector and the potential growth opportunities it could bring to India's burgeoning semiconductor ecosystem.

During the meeting, Sanjay Mehrotra discussed Micron Technologies' intention to establish a state-of-the-art assembly and testing plant in India, representing an investment of USD 2.75 billion. The proposed plant is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing the semiconductor manufacturing capabilities within the country.

Minister Piyush Goyal expressed his appreciation for the company's investment plans, recognising the positive impact it could have on India's semiconductor landscape. Both parties engaged in talks about the promising growth trajectory of India's semiconductor industry, emphasising the potential it holds to position India as a global leader in this vital sector.

Following the meeting, Minister Goyal took to social media platform Twitter and shared his thoughts, stating, "Met Sanjay Mehrotra, President & CEO of Micron Technology. Discussed Micron's recent investment plans in the country and how India's growing semiconductor ecosystem is poised to make it one of the global leaders in the sector."

The upcoming semiconductor assembly and testing facility will be established in Gujarat, India. The project will be carried out in two phases. Phase 1 will include 500,000 square feet of planned cleanroom space, with operations expected to commence by late 2024. Micron will gradually scale up the facility's capacity in line with evolving global demand trends.

The massive investment by Micron in India's semiconductor industry is anticipated to generate a significant economic impact. It is projected to create up to 5,000 direct job opportunities within Micron and an additional 15,000 jobs in the local community over the coming years.
