The National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India (NCCF) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) are reportedly in talks to sell subsidised tomatoes on the government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) platform in Delhi NCR.

The ONDC platform is presently testing online tomato sales, according to news reports. If all goes well, the government would shortly announce the sale of tomatoes on ONDC at a subsidised rate of Rs 70 per kg, reports added.

The selling of tomatoes on ONDC is likely to start in Delhi NCR before spreading to other cities.

The development comes at a time when tomato prices in some regions of the country have risen to as much as Rs 160 per kg. To help the general public, the government directed agricultural marketing organisations NCCF and NAFED to offer tomatoes at a discounted price of Rs 90 per kg. This price was later reduced to Rs 70 per kg.

It should be mentioned that rapid commerce sites such as Zepto, Blinkit, and Swiggy Instamart sell tomatoes for up to Rs 170 per kg.

The most recent development demonstrates ONDC's growing prominence. While tomatoes were previously sold at reduced prices in the retail sector, the move is an attempt to reach out to online buyers while also providing further support to ONDC.

The ONDC platform was launched last year with support from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade. It is an open network with the goal of democratising the ecommerce sector and allowing small enterprises to participate.

Since its inception last year, the network has gradually expanded its reach across cities and industries. ONDC said earlier this month that it has gone Beta in five more locations, including Delhi NCR, Mumbai, and Chennai. This month, it also reached the 35,000 daily order mark.

Furthermore, after entering and disrupting several industries such as food delivery and grocery delivery, the platform now intends to enter the financial arena.
