Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) on Monday said it has entered into a partnership with leading companies in the global data centre industry. RIL has joined hands with Brookfield Infrastructure and Digital Realty to invest in Indian SPVs dedicated to developing cutting-edge data centres across the country.

The joint venture will be known as 'Digital Connexion: A Brookfield, Jio, and Digital Realty Company,' with RIL holding an equal stake of 33.33 per cent in each Indian SPV, making it a prominent partner in the endeavour.

With data consumption in India already ranking among the highest globally, the demand for data centres is predicted to soar even higher with the increased accessibility to digital services such as over-the-top (OTT) platforms and gaming, coupled with the ongoing 5G rollout. This growth will be further fueled by the adoption of data-intensive technologies like IoT and AI and a surge in the emphasis on localised data storage.

In a statement, Kiran Thomas, CEO, Jio Platforms Ltd. said, “We are excited to partner with Digital Realty, one of the most innovative data center companies globally and with Brookfield, our existing and trusted partner. The partnership will help us serve our enterprise and SMB clients with cutting-edge, plug-and-play solutions delivered from the cloud and lead their digital transformation and make them more competitive and efficient.”

The joint venture is already progressing with data centre projects in prime locations, including Chennai and Mumbai. The first data centre, a 20 megawatt (MW) greenfield facility (MAA10) situated on a 100 MW campus in Chennai, is anticipated to be operational by the end of 2023. Additionally, the JV has recently acquired a 2.15-acre land plot in Mumbai, earmarked for a 40 MW data centre.

Arpit Agrawal, Managing Director, Head of Infrastructure, India & Middle East, Brookfield, said, “We are very pleased to expand our existing partnership with Reliance and add their deep expertise in the Indian telecom, tech and data landscape to the platform. Data Centres provide essential services and critical infrastructure to support the digitalisation that is taking place in every aspect of life in India. Together with Reliance and Digital Realty, we look forward to providing the best of solutions to the digital transformation needs of Indian and global corporates.”

The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to complete in around three months.
