"More Govt Subsidies & Incentives For Film Industry"

An alumnus of the New York Film Academy (NYFA), Director Faruk Kabir speaks to BW Businessworld about the world of Indian cinema. In a quick conversation, he highlights the pain points and what to expect in 2023.  

How different is directing a series as compared to a movie? 
While the technical or creative process is the same, a series allows for a deeper exploration of the concept or the characters. In a film, the narrative and the characters are structured more concisely to fit a two-hour timeline.  

As a young director, what would you say the Indian film industry should change about itself?
I would highlight three points: 

1. If the content is king, writers must be paid well.   

2. Secondly, there should be stronger laws for unpaid dues across the department.  

3. Thirdly, there must be more government subsidies and incentives for the film industry.   

The audience and the content consumed have changed over the years - your view? 
We are a rapidly changing and dynamic society. Tech and popular culture are ever influencing our minds, so yes, content has to reflect this change.  

What will 2023 bring to the world of Indian cinema? 
Unique stories will flourish in theatres in 2023. A reinvention of themes and visuals will get the audiences to the theatres. 

Your favourite movie or series - and why? 
It would be Game of Thrones. The series has set a new benchmark in storytelling and visual excellence.

Your favourite director - and why? 
I would say Raj Kapoor because of the Shakespearean way in which he told stories.
