After a busy day and a hurrying office backpack, I reached KAMPAI, a famous Japanese restaurant in New Delhi. One month ago, this restaurant chain expanded its footprint and opened a new eatery at DLF Promenade in Vasant Kunj.

Japanese food traces back to its prominent introduction in 1989 when Tokyo, India’s first Japanese restaurant started in New Delhi. Fast forward to today, KAMPAI is another restaurant which is making a fresh start in its own way.

KAMPAI’s founder, Avantika Sinha Bahl says, “We serve modern Japanese cuisine and aim to bridge the gap between Indians and Japanese food.”

Bahl believes that Japanese food is restricted to only five-star hotels and everybody can’t go there to eat Japanese. “So, we give people something which is a little more accessible and targets Indian as well as Japanese customers. Thats why, the idea of authentic small Japanese restaurant makes sense,” she said.

Bahl also shares her thought about Japanese restaurants particularly, rather Chinese or Korean by saying, “Chinese is already quite oversaturated, however, Korean cuisine has become really popular now, but I feel like the Japanese have a lot of potential in the Indian market and also there were not too many brands that were doing it at the time when I started it.”

On the future of the business, Bahl hopes to expand in other tier-one cities as well and said, “We are opening KAMPAI in Gurgaon in the next couple of months and looking at Bombay, Bangalore and other markets, and establish it as a Japanese food brand.”

In the end, when I talked to other invitees, Parul Singh says that KAMPAI is serving one of the best gourmet Japanese foods. She shares her experience by saying that everybody should try Sushi and Veg Miso Soup, and called Tuna Pizaa, an innovative fusion.
