Gujarat Chief Minister, Vijay Rupani launched Ahmedabad’s first command and control centre yesterday in the city and hailed it as a mighty solution to managing the city well. Speaking on the sidelines of BW Smart Cities Conclave in Ahmedabad after launching the centre, Rupani said, “The whole city will be controlled through this command and control centre, this will enable us to do better surveillance of the city and control the crime rate, illegal encroachment as well as manage traffic efficiently.”

Rupani also affirmed that the new command and control centre will establish a new kind of management of the city, help authorities to do away with the bad organization and give a new direction to the country’s development process. “The deficit in managing the city will be taken care of and this will ensure a smart city, smart municipality and smart municipal corporation too.”

This centre will be the centre point of the city’s safety and security. Information regarding the surveillance camera feeds, solid waste collection data, city utility maps, traffic statistics and parking availability etc. will all be gathered here. Around 6,000 smart street lights of the city will be controlled from this centre.

Seen as a model smart city, Ahmedabad is world’s heritage city which was also given the status of one of India’s premium smart cities which the chief minister called a perfect conjunction of a heritage and smart city. Talking about the parameters like the ease of living, Rupani said, “Due to Ahmedabad’s Smart Cities Mission, citizens will get various benefits in areas such as e-health, smart voter, e-governance, urban mobility, disaster management, sewage treatment plants and green energy.”

Rupani stated that due to these initiatives, the Ease of Living and Ease of Doing Business will get a lot better in Gujarat. “From rich to poor all should be included in the development process and be made a part of inclusive growth. All citizens alike should get access to a good standard of life and ease of living which we stress a lot on.” He said that the cities of Gujarat will get data-driven in the coming years where there will be smart infrastructure and innovation fostering ecosystem.

The chief minister informed that under the biggest of projects of Ahmedabad’s Smart Cities Mission, in the In-City Slum Rehabilitation project, more than 7,000 families will be provided with comfortable homes.

Also, talking about the startup culture in the country, he maintained, “The new breed of entrepreneurs and startups are coming up with a lot of innovative technologies that can solve a lot of problems of our cities.”

Rupani also said that the problem of pollution and traffic are the two big challenges which need to be addressed at the earliest. “Every citizen has the right to breathe in clean air as their health is the responsibility of the municipal corporation. Therefore, renewable energy, e-vehicles, less carbon emissions, recycling process and water recycling, all these issues need to be resolved to ensure a sustainable standard of living in the smart cities.”

In the budget of 2018-19, the Gujarat government has kept aside Rs. 12,500 crore for urban development to make the state truly world class.
