About 57.43 per cent of Indian women participated under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) in 2022-23, the central government informed Parliament on Tuesday.

Notably, the percentage of women's participation in 2021-22 was 54.82 amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

In terms of women's participation in 2022-23,  Kerala topped the chart with 89.82 per cent, followed by Puducherry at 87.48. This information was given by the Union Minister of State for Rural Development, Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti in a written reply in Lok Sabha.

The gender-neutral central scheme promotes the participation of women by providing wage parity with men, provision separate schedules of rates of wages for women and work-side sheds for children and child care services.

The minister said that a total of 2.95 crore persons were registered up to the financial year 2020-21 in the age group of 18 to 30 years which was increased to 3.06 crore persons up to financial year 2022-23 under MNREGS.
