Discussing the panel: Coming of age for today’s most prominent people managers at the 3rd edition of the BW Businessworld HR Excellence Awards 2017 were some of the most recognized people including Rahul Taneja, Chief People Officer, Jet Airways (India) Limited, P J Anand, Vice President, Corporate Human Resources, ITC Limited, Vikram Bector, CHRO, Piramal Enterprises Limited, Richard Rekhy, Former CEO, KPMG India and Manish Kharbanda, Executive Director & CEO, Jindal Steel and Power Limited. The panel was moderated by Himani Chandna, Editorial Head, BW People.

Speaking about empowering CHRO’s to make strategic decisions for the company Richard Rekhy opened the discussion by saying, “We have always wanted to move our H.R team from the back office to the front office and make people in the organization trust the H.R. At the same time they should also be involved in understanding their organizations.”

Manish Kharbanda opined on the same topic, “The roles of CHRO’s are changing today and CEO’s would always agree that it is important to understand the opinions of CHRO’s. The learning comes through the leaders of the company when they go through and discover different processes and decide what processes suit the company at that time and the kind of manpower that can contribute to the goals. I manage people who manage my business.”

Further down the discussion when Rahul Taneja was asked about the support that Chief People Officers expect he stated that all the processes should be broken down in order to understand the role of the employees and their skillsets. He also mentions that the H.R. department is always the most discussed in the organization which may create a different level of curiosity amongst employees. Along with the mentioned points, he also said that “More CHRO ‘s must be brought into the boardroom which would help in analyzing the manpower required.”

He added by saying, “The cost of manpower goes up because of poor planning and in order to traverse you need to audit along with discussing the nominations and remunerations for the kind of employees you want to hire.”

PJ Anand shared a technological viewpoint to the fundamentals of People Managers. “The fundamental part of the new age human resource industry is the way they are using technology and analyzing data. Most of the new age data is technology driven hence H.R.’s need to understand the talent they are hiring with respect to the compatibility of the system they follow.”

At the discussion, Vikram Bector, CHRO, Piramal Enterprises Limited discussed that the fundamentals should be focused towards the business and not the process. He explains that the H.R.’s must get involved more with the businesses of the companies as well. Agreeing with Richard’s point of view he said that, “It is the right time for the H.R.’s to get into the business of the company and passionately understand if the contributors are playing their roles.” Talking about the changing roles of People Managers he added, “HR’s are in a unique position  where they can get to be the coach of decision makers of an organization.”

While concluding the panel Richard opined that the CHRO’s need to stand up for strategic plans of the companies and not just follow instructions and execute them.
