Lazy, fear, doubt and indecision are the four enemies which make an organisation bad according to Ketan Dewan, Co-Founder & CEO, Talocity. He was participating in a panel discussion on ‘Creating a Great Workplace: What does it take’ at BW Businessworld’s 3rd HR Excellence Awards 2017 held in Mumbai on 25 October 2017.

According to Cecilia Azavedo, HR Head, Pharmaceutical Division of Johnson & Johnson India, a great workplace is the one which respects your values and contribution. “The organisation should have a larger purpose for the people working for it and the society at large, other than making money,” she said.  A successful HR professional should be able to create a system that to be followed and implement it, she opined.

Participating in the discussion, Rajendra Mehta, Chief People Officer, DHFL said, “HR professionals should understand that each individual got a unique personality and that allows them to perform or not perform in a certain way. It is the job of HR to allow people to find their own self.” According to Mehta, a great workplace is the one which allows you to earn, learn and grow. HR professionals should be able to attract and retain talent. This will increase the reputation of the workplace and will impact the bottom-line of the organisation, he observed. HR Department should understand the elements on which the organisation works – both internal and external factors and this will help them to get an HR Blueprint approved, he added. “Motivation for an HR professional comes from the opportunities given to them by the organisation to perform and implement them. By adding value to the organisation will make an HR professional grow,” Mehta further said.

Opined, Alok Tripathi, Consulting Leader, India & South Asia, Talent Management Consulting, “If you have an emotional connection with an organisation, it is a great place to work with.” The purpose of the HRD is to take everyone along, he added. In the age of disruption, HR professionals also get disrupted. That is the reason behind sometimes they create something new in the organisation and leave the organisation soon. Moreover, the ecosystem for enterprises are really attractive, he cited as another reason for job hopping. “There is a thrill in creating something new and implementing it,” he concluded.

Said Nidhi Saraf, CEO, Key-Ventures, “In a small and start-up workplace, HR job is not done alone by the HR person. You need to create a work culture.” Creating a work culture will help to set a benchmark for each one and this will help the organisation grow also, she added.

Ketan Dewan moderated this power-packed session.
