Amongst a plethora of expert speakers that enthralled the audience at the 3rd BW Businessworld Digital India Summit, Vinit Goenka, Member of the governing council of Center for Railway Information System (CRIS) expressed his opinions on the Digital India led initiatives of the government with specific emphasis on Railway and Highway.

He started his speech by observing how Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is the largest government e-commerce platform in India and is helping millions to daily book their tickets online hassle free.

“More than transparency, IRCTC is aimed at customer delight,” shared Goenka. The customer centric initiative has been motivated by incidents and episodes from day to day life. Sharing anecdotes from his own life, Goenka said that we often don’t look at the problems in our routine lives. The power of data representation has resulted in saving revenue and consequently, creating higher index of happiness,” said Goenka.

The ‘smart push’ that we need is not limited to free WiFi but the prediction that one can make towards the upcoming problems and their solutions. “Can we predict the upcoming defects in car sheds of trains, in the monthly damages,” asks Goenka. The forecasting of defects would definitely save a lot of money and time. IRCTC was formulated after interpreting the data conceived from the various analysts.

Vinit Goenka who is also a member of the IT Taskforce, which is under the Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Government of India, shared his insight on the Vehicle Smart Module solution, OVSM. “The customers don’t want discount on rates but discount on timing. We have never thought about the guy collecting the tax who doesn’t even get yearly income rise,” said Goenka.

Online Vehicle Smart Module is expected to reduce long queues at the toll plaza and can be used in automated parking management. The need of the hour is to create a system that focuses on smart solution and predictability that substitutes the contemporary problems.
