A couple from neighboring Tamil Nadu was arrested for hijacking a truck carrying 2.5 tonnes of tomatoes in Bengaluru after staging a fake accident for extortion.

According to the police, the couple from Vellore was part of a gang of highway robbers that targeted Mallesh, a farmer from Chitradurga district. They intercepted him at Chikkajala on 8 July, claiming that his truck had collided with their car and demanded compensation.

When the farmer refused to comply, the gang assaulted him and forcibly removed him from the truck. They then fled with the vehicle, which was loaded with tomatoes worth over 2.5 lakhs.

Following the farmer's complaint, the RMC Yard police launched an investigation and successfully tracked the movement of the stolen truck. As a result, Bhaskar (28) and his wife Sindhuja (26) were apprehended on Saturday. However, three other members of the gang remain at large. Mallesh was transporting the tomatoes to Kolar when he fell victim to the robbery in Bengaluru.
