Railways Aim Regular Non-AC General Trains For Low-income Groups From Next Year: Report

Railway Board has a piece of good news for low-earning groups like migrant workers and labourers across the country as it is planning to run non-air conditioned, general category trains for the workers as part of its regular timetable, according to a media report on Wednesday.

The notification of this plan surprised the majority as usually, such special trains are run during the festive time or in summer during the holiday rush, the report said additionally.

The report mentioned that the new train is a permanent fixture taken after a study that identified states with low-income travelling passengers in substantial. Also, the ticket wait list record was taken into consideration which highlighted the long waiting for travel over months.

The move came following the issue of passenger overcrowding in trains that was flagged by users on social media.
 
The trains to relieve the workers' travelling expenses are likely to start in January 2024, as per the report.

It stressed the trains will be non-air conditioned with LHB coaches and will have only sleepers and general class service.

According to the Railway Board, the states namely, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, West Bengal, Punjab, Assam, Gujarat, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh have most of the skilled-unskilled workers, artisans and labourers and so the special trains are planned for these regions.
