A research study has revealed that 5G smartphone sales in India crossed the 100 million mark for the first time in May 2023, surpassing the 4G smartphones per month purchase.

The data released by Counterpoint Research underlined the growing popularity of 5G smartphones in the lower price bands. It said that the share of 5G smartphones in the sub-Rs 20,000 price bracket increased from 4 per cent in 2021 to 14 per cent in 2022.

The study emphasised that last year the launch of the Lava Blaze 5G brought the price of these devices down to Rs 10,000 or below, bringing in a wider base of consumer.

Top telecom operators Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel began launching their fifth-generation mobile networks in October 2022 but the Counterpoint study suggests that 5G services are not widely available across India. This has resulted in patchy coverage.

Furthermore, the study highlighted that the 5G smartphone shipment share in India has increased to 41 per cent, with 5G smartphone shipments growing by 14 per cent YoY.

The country witnessed 34 new fifth-generation smartphone launches in the first quarter of 2023.
