Apple has encountered significant hurdles in the production of its highly anticipated Vision Pro augmented-reality headset, leading to major cuts in its production forecasts, according to a recent report by the Financial Times.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, the report highlighted design complexities as the primary reason for the setbacks.

Launched just last month, the Vision Pro headset was poised to hit the market early next year in the United States, boasting a starting price of USD 3,499. However, this price tag exceeds three times the cost of Meta's most expensive headset in their mixed and virtual reality product line.

According to reports, Apple's sole contract manufacturer for the device, is now expected to produce fewer than 400,000 units of the Vision Pro in 2024. This figure falls well below Apple's initial internal sales target of one million units within the first year of release, as stated in the Financial Times report.

The report further added that Apple has reached out to two China-based suppliers in an attempt to secure enough components for 130,000 to 150,000 units during the headset's inaugural year. Moreover, plans for a more affordable version of the device have reportedly been postponed.

The production challenges revolve around the manufacturing process of the micro-OLED displays used in the Vision Pro headset. Apple is said to be dissatisfied with the yield of defect-free micro-OLEDs, which has caused complications and delays.

The revised production forecasts have also left Luxshare disappointed, as the company had prepared to scale up its production capacity to a level that would accommodate nearly 18 million units annually in the coming years, as reported by the Financial Times.
