Google-backed AI Startup Anthropic Raises $450 Mn In Series C

The funding is expected to support startup’s work in developing AI systems, including Claude

Leading AI startup Anthropic has raised USD 450 million in Series C funding led by Spark Capital with participation from Google, Salesforce Ventures, Sound Ventures, Zoom Ventures and others. 

The funding is expected to support the Google-backed startup’s work in developing AI systems, including Claude, its generative AI assistant that can perform a wide variety of conversational and text processing tasks.

Though Anthropic’s valuation is unknown The Information in March reported it to be at over USD 4.1 billion as it sought to raise capital. Meanwhile, Reuters sources said the valuation was at almost USD 5 billion.

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by Dario Amodei, OpenAI’s former vice president of research, and his sister Daniela Amodei, who was OpenAI’s vice president of safety and policy. 

On the latest funding round, Anthropic CEO, Dario Amodei said, “We are thrilled that these leading investors and technology companies are supporting Anthropic’s mission: AI research and products that put safety at the frontier. The systems we are building are being designed to provide reliable AI services that can positively impact businesses and consumers now and in the future.”

With our Series C funding, the company said it hoped to grow its product offerings, support businesses that will responsibly deploy Claude in the market and further AI safety research.

“Our team is focused on AI alignment techniques that allow AI systems to better handle adversarial conversations, follow precise instructions, and generally be more transparent about their behaviors and limitations,” the AI company said.

Zoom’s investment arm also participated in the USD 450 million Series C round. Recently, the video communications platform also announced that it would Anthropic’s Claude to build customer-facing AI products.
