There are 202 National Highway projects currently under construction by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), with an estimated cost of Rs 79,789 crore. These national highway projects will be covering a total of 6270 kilometres across India.

These details were shared by the union roadways minister Nitin Gadkari in a written reply in the parliament on Thursday. In his reply, Gadkari revealed that these projects have construction periods ranging from 18-30 months from the appointed date.

42 of the 202 National Highway projects, totaling 474 km and costing Rs 10,992 crore, are currently in the bidding process. In addition, 11 National Highway projects in Maharashtra that total 245 kilometres in length and cost roughly Rs 3,816 crore are about to declare the appointed date.

The Ministry further stated that new NH projects are typically completed within a window of two to three years. However, there are times when the building of National Highways is delayed for a variety of reasons, such as the government's condition precedents, such as different clearances, utility relocation, delays in land acquisition, delays on the part of contractors/concessionaires, including cash flow issues and others.

The Union Minister also added that the authorities are closely monitoring the construction of National Highways in the country. Gadkari also highlighted that periodic reviews are held at various levels to resolve issues and expedite the progress of all National Highway projects.

The amount of cost escalation in these projects for the delay in completion work has not been finalised, Gadkari said.
