Engineering Education For Sustainable Development

Engineers have to operate within an increasingly complex set of constraints, and therefore must be capable of dealing with a range of challenges. The panel discussed on some very straightforward principles: about living within Earth’s finite limits and resources, helping everyone on the planet to achieve an acceptable quality of life; acting as stewards of the environment for future generations; dealing with complexity; and handling the many trade-offs which have to be made. The panel discussed how Engineers contribute to the society for the sustainable growth of a nation.

The session was moderated by Prof. (Dr.) Satish Chander Sharma, Chairman and Director General, Maharaja Group of colleges Rajasthan Technical University. The panel of this session consisted of people from academics like, Dr. Vikas Daryal, Director, Tilak Raj Chadha Institute of Management & Technology, Prof. (Dr.) Virendra Kumar Shrivastava, Director, Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology SD India, Mr. Sahil Chalana, Founder, Collegedunia.com, Shri Kunwar Shekhar Vijendra, Chancellor, Shobhit University.

The moderator, Prof. (Dr.) Satish Chander Sharma began the session by stressing that the need of the hour is to design a curriculum which helps in achieving sustainable goals by producing holistic engineers instead of traditional engineers. While expressing his opinion on changing the curriculum, Dr. Sharma also talked about creating sustainable college campuses as there are only a few colleges in the country with a sustainable campus. Shri Kunwar Shekhar Vijendra stated that the universities have become islands of excellence and engineers across the country work with the ideology- I develop for my development. According to him, sustainable development can be ensured by moving from ‘I’ to ‘We’. Furthermore, Shri Kunwar talked about the need to provide opportunities for experimenting which is instrumental in bringing about development.
