As organisations worldwide grapple with the rapidly evolving work post-pandemic, HR leaders are leading from the front to do everything to put their employees first to retain their best employees. The gut induced by the covid pandemic has forced organisations to realign their long-term people and business strategy. The business challenges are even more daunting given that the HR practitioners need to bridge gaps, repair holes and lay the new groundwork to help employees perform and thrive as the great resignation persists!

This September, O.C. Tanner released its 2023 Global Culture Report, which examines the latest trends around employee retention, culture, and leadership. It also measures changes in the six core elements of the workplace culture, called the "Talent Magnets", that together determine employee decision to join, engage with, and remain at any place of work.

Scores have increased across the board from last year, except for wellbeing. The improvements are primarily the result of efforts organisations made to step up their cultures in the wake of the Great Resignation. On the other hand, employees' sense of wellbeing was lower, given the amount of burnout left over from the pandemic and as life and business ramped up again.

The report throws light on some overarching themes and commonalities across various organisations. One of the most significant themes in this year's report is the Community and finding Fulfilment. Organisations that reconnect their people by adopting a community mindset where employees find meaning in their work, believe that they belong, and feel more fulfilled see higher scores on culture metrics.

O.C. Tanner's research showed that a sense of belonging improved employee retention by 43 per cent, and boosted the average employee's estimated tenure by a significant 84 per cent. It also appeared to effectively reduce negative mental health symptoms, with employees who feel a sense of belonging reporting 38 per cent less burnout.

This suggests that the "community" at work is no longer important just for a handful of industries or sectors but is a must-have for all, especially those organisations where retaining top talents is crucial to their business success.

Putting Fulfilment above all.

The report highlights that when organisations empower employees' personal goals, enable life balance, and support the growth and development of everyone holistically, productivity and retention are just two of the rewards.

"Personal fulfilment is now an expectation of employees, which means it's now a mandate for organisations," the report says. As an increasing number of people resigned from their jobs last year, the reasons often boiled down to a compelling desire for a more fulfilling life. A common thread during the great resignation period was the reason to find meaning and value at work.

The Global Culture Report found that a high level of Community, connection and belonging improved the odds of Fulfilment by 489 per cent, and boosted an employees' sense of purpose by 583 per cent.

"Organisations would need to get intentional about new evolved ways of working and will need to integrate recognition as a part of their people strategy. Community & Fulfilment are the cornerstones in today's dynamic workplace, and it’s now or never for organisations to put practices that build stronger communities to navigate the treacherous market conditions" - Says Zubin Zack - Managing Director - South Asia, Middle East and Africa.
