‘God could not be everywhere that is why he made mothers’ - the phrase perfectly denotes the importance of mother in one’s life. She brings life into the world, nurtures it, and looks after it like no one else can. Every religion mentions mother as the biggest shield of a child who trains them to become good individuals.

Every relationship is special but the bond of the mother and child is beyond words. Mother is the most significant role in every women’s life, where she became a warrior for her child. Earlier mothers were kept limited to the household chores but today they are crossing those boundaries and looking after their profession, home and children.

History Of The Day

The history of Mother’s Day is not popular but indeed rich and forgotten. Mother’s Day has come out of the movement in America by three ladies - Ann Reeves Jarvis, Julia Ward Howe, and Ann’s daughter, Anna M. Jarvis. Who struggled to give dignity to the women of the society. The legacy of struggling for women's rights passed from one lady to another. It started with  Ann Reeves Jarvis who was an activist and a teacher. Reeves Jarvis used to organise Sunday school lessons. She was very concerned about the high mortality rate in society and constituted  “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs” in West Virginia. During the civil war in America, Reeves was encouraging women to help each other irrespective of the side are with.

Later the legacy was transferred to Julia Ward Howe who was a poet as well as a reformer She wrote books like  “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”. Howe also worked to provide a hygienic environment during the civil war. Around 1870, Howe organised a “Mother’s Day for Peace” dedicated to the celebration of peace and the eradication of war. She used to think that mothers should gather and fight against the cruelty of war.

Eventually, the daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis, Anna M. Jarvis wanted to memorialise her mother’s life and started campaigning for the celebration of a day to honour all mothers. She wanted to honour motherhood and go through all the legal and political procedures to make it an official Mother’s Day. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill designating the second Sunday in May as a legal holiday to be called “Mother’s Day”- dedicated “to the best mother in the world, your mother.”

Relevance Of Mother's Day

Women as a mother are the nodal figure of all the financial activities in the household for a long, they take care of all the expenses and save for the future. With the passing of time, mothers have also crossed boundaries and joined businesses to make themselves financially independent too.

Nowadays, social media is witnessing many women making videos of how they are managing their household and kids, and there they are termed as ‘Mompreneurs’. Working mothers are no more wonder in today’s time even though it has become a positive trend that is inspiring lakhs of mothers to build themselves.

Theme For 2023

As such there is no particular theme for celebrating Mother’s Day 2023 but this day always commemorates the importance of mothers across the globe. The amount of pain a mother takes on her body to give birth to her child directly signifies her inner strength, the day is to make mothers realise their inner potential. Society needs to take a pledge to look after every mother and provide them with a fair chance so that they can grow and glow.
