The organisers have announced that 3.25 million tickets for next year's Olympic Games in Paris have been sold in the first sales phase.

Tickets were made available worldwide from a single platform for the first time in Olympic Games history, with tickets sold in packs over three weeks in the first phase, which saw fans from 158 countries and regions register for the sale.

“The public's reaction to the first phase of Games ticket sales was truly incredible. With over 3.2 million tickets sold in less than three weeks, demand far outstripped expectations, for which we are grateful,” Tony Estanguet, president of Paris 2024, stated on Thursday.

According to news agency Xinhua, the French public made up two-thirds of ticket purchasers, with 45 per cent of all buyers being women, a relatively high proportion in Olympic history, with Paris 2024 set to be the first Olympic Games with equal participation by male and female athletes.

Climbing and BMX freestyle tickets sold out on the first day, while fencing, judo, breaking, and track cycling tickets sold out in a matter of days.

A total of around 10 million tickets will be sold for the Olympic Games, with 80 per cent of these going directly to the public via the official ticketing platform.

Individual ticket sales will be the focus of the next phase of sales, which will run from 15 March to 20 April. Those who have been chosen will be able to purchase tickets beginning 11 May. The remaining tickets will be available in real-time on a first-come, first-served basis at the end of 2023 and into 2024.

In addition, 70,000 tickets for the opening ceremony on the Seine will be made available in the second phase.
