Once I was staying with my two close friends, who are successful software engineers in multinational companies. They came home exhausted late evening, the husband sat in front of the television while the wife went directly into the kitchen. Both are well educated yet they had well-defined gender roles in their family, illustrates Atishi Marlena Singh, Political Activist and AAP MLA while she explains the difficulty a woman faces across the country.

According to Singh, “Education is an investment for future giving escape velocity.” But she also added, “It’s difficult to be a woman in India and it starts before one step out of their house.” During her visit to a government-operated girl’s school in Delhi, students were asked about their male sibling’s education. To her surprise, 85 per cent of students raised their hand saying their brothers are going to a private school in Delhi. Atishi said, “We live in an unequal world” during BW Businessworld Women Entrepreneurship Summit and Awards 2020.

Being a leader in a male dominant field, she thinks leadership and dialogue go together. When asked about the qualities of a leader, Singh said, “One should have perseverance, ability to take the risk, build a team.”

This Delhi Politician, Educator, Political Activist & MLA is one of the key members of Delhi Government School Policy to revive Delhi government schools. Singh wishes to work in the education sector in her present tenure. She was also spearheading the flagship Mohalla Sabha Project for the Government of NCT of Delhi. Under her supervision, the infrastructure of schools was greatly improved, she was involved in organising parent-teacher meetings and strengthening regulations on private school fees. Further, she was instrumental in shaping the Happiness Curriculum and developing the Teacher Development Coordinator Programme in Delhi Schools for this slew of achievements & for addressing the UN Sustainability Development Goal towards ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education.
